From the Tradition

What the Scholars Say

The importance of Arabic has been emphasized by the greatest scholars of Islam across the centuries.

"Seek knowledge and understanding of (fiqh) the Sunnah and seek knowledge and understanding of Arabic."

— 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه)

"Learn Arabic, for it strengthens the intelligence and increases one's noble conduct (al-murū'ah)."

— 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه)

"The tongue that Allah, Exalted and Majestic, chose was the Arabic tongue, so He revealed His Noble Book through it, and made it the tongue of the Seal of His Prophets, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). For this reason, we say: Every person who is able should learn Arabic, for it is the most important tongue."

— Imam ash-Shāfi'ī (رحمه الله)

"Among the obligations upon one who does not know the Arabic language—the language in which the Qur'an was revealed, and which is the language of the Prophet ﷺ—is that he should take from it enough to suffice him to the point that he understands the correct usages of speech, its proper expression, its outward form, and its meanings. That is within reach to whoever loves knowledge and seeks it, especially for the one concerned with religious knowledge—which is the loftiest and greatest of sciences—through which Allah is obeyed, praised, and glorified."

— al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn 'Abd al-Barr (رحمه الله)

"The Arabic tongue is the banner of Islam and its people."

— Ibn Taymiyya (رحمه الله)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
